Selling your old phone, exchanging it, or handing it down to a parent?
Most of us do the same thing โ delete a few photos, run a factory reset, hand it over.
That isn't quite enough.
Simply deleting files definitely isn't enough, and a factory reset alone isn't always enough either.
Old photos, chats and logged-in accounts can come back to haunt you.
What order should I do this in?
The order matters more than any single step.
- Back up what you want to keep โ photos, contacts, chats.
- Log out of WhatsApp and your important accounts, especially banking and email.
- Remove your Google account on Android, or sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My / Activation Lock on iPhone.
- Now do a factory reset.
- Take out the SIM card and the memory (SD) card.
Do them in that sequence and nothing gets left behind.
Do them out of order and you'll find yourself reaching for a phone you've already wiped.
Why does the third step matter most?
Step three is the one people skip, and it's the one that causes the trouble.
Removing your Google account, or signing out of iCloud and switching off Find My, unlinks the phone from you.
Activation Lock is the feature that stops anyone else setting the phone up as their own.
Skip that step, and the phone can stay tied to your account โ and your data with it.
The buyer may not be able to set it up at all.
Guess who gets that phone call.
Does a factory reset really erase everything?
On modern, encrypted phones, yes.
Encrypted means the data on the phone is scrambled.
It can only be read using a key held on the device itself.
A factory reset throws that key away, which is what makes your old data unrecoverable.
That's exactly why the reset belongs after you've signed out, not before.
But it only covers the phone's own storage.
A reset doesn't wipe your SIM card or your memory card.
Your SIM carries your number and sometimes your contacts.
An SD card can hold years of photos and downloads.
Both slide out in half a minute.
Take them out yourself rather than trusting anyone else to.
Until it's properly wiped, it's still your phone.
Treat it that way.
