Somebody always says it in the group chat.
Signal and WhatsApp use the same encryption.
So they must be equally private.
It is a fair thing to assume.
The answer is not in the messages at all.
Are the messages themselves really the same?
Both apps scramble your messages end to end.
That means only you and the person you are writing to can read them.
That part genuinely is the same idea.
Compare only the contents of a chat and the two apps look identical.
Which is exactly why most comparisons stop there and everyone moves on.
So where is the actual difference?
It is in everything wrapped around the message.
Who you talk to, how often, and for how long.
How many groups you are in and who else is in them.
Which numbers sit in your address book.
And whether the app keeps a copy.
Where your backup lives, and whether it is protected as well as your chats.
None of that is the message, and all of it is revealing.
Why does the information around a message matter so much?
Because a pattern says more than a paragraph.
A daily call to the same number tells a story with no words attached.
A sudden burst of messages at 2am tells another one.
Nobody has to read a word to see who matters to you.
Or what changed this week.
So "they cannot read my messages" is a weaker defence than it sounds.
What should I actually compare?
Stop comparing logos and start comparing what each app keeps.
Ask how much of your contact list is uploaded.
And whether it stays uploaded.
Ask what record exists of who you spoke to, not just what you said.
Ask where the backup sits.
A backup stored outside the app is often the weakest link.
Ask how much of this you can switch off yourself.
Then choose with the full picture instead of half of it.
There is no need to delete anything in a hurry.
Plenty of people keep one app for family and neighbours.
And a quieter one for the conversations that should leave no trail.
