Switch On Android's Theft Protection

Switch On Android's Theft Protection

A phone snatched from your hand is usually unlocked at that moment.

That is the whole point of snatching it while you are using it.

The thief now has your open apps, your messages and maybe your banking.

Android has a set of features built for exactly this moment.

What does Theft Detection Lock do?

It watches for the movement of a phone being grabbed and carried off quickly.

If it detects that, it locks the screen straight away.

It is not perfect, but it can turn an open phone into a locked one in seconds.

What is Offline Device Lock?

Thieves often switch off the internet so you cannot track or wipe the phone.

If your unlocked phone stays offline in a suspicious way, this feature locks the screen.

What is Remote Lock?

It lets you lock your phone from any other phone or computer.

You only need your phone number, not your Google password.

That matters, because in a panic few people remember their password.

Remote Lock needs Find My Device switched on and a screen lock set up.

Where do I turn these on?

On most Android phones, open Settings -> Google -> All services -> Theft protection.

Some phones put it under Settings -> Security and privacy.

Switch on Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock and Remote Lock.

Remote Lock will ask you to verify your phone number.

These features come through Google updates for phones on Android 10 and later, so some older phones will not show them.

What do I do if my phone is snatched?

From any phone or computer, go to android.com/lock and enter your number.

That locks the screen.

Then use Find Hub to locate or erase it, and call your network to block the SIM.
