You deleted Facebook years ago.
You never touched Instagram either.
So Meta has nothing on you, right?
Sadly, that is not how it works.
How can they have my details if I never signed up?
The moment a friend lets an app "find contacts", your details leave their phone.
Your name, your number and your email go up along with everybody else's.
You never agreed to anything.
The permission was given on someone else's device.
It usually happens in the first minutes of a new app.
Nobody is reading carefully at that point.
What is a shadow profile?
A shadow profile is a record built about a person who never created an account.
It is stitched together from other people's contact lists.
Not from anything you ever typed.
Say twenty friends have you saved with your full name and office number.
That is twenty confirmations of exactly who you are.
Enough of those uploads, and a picture of you exists.
On a service you have never once opened.
Why can't I just switch it off?
Because you cannot opt out of a club you never joined.
Every privacy control sits inside an account.
So does every "download my data" link and every delete button.
No account means no settings page, no dashboard and nobody to write to.
The usual advice, go and check your privacy settings, has nowhere to go.
This is not like the settings you can fix in an afternoon.
So what can I actually do about it?
You cannot control what other people upload.
You can control what you hand over.
When an app asks to "find contacts", say no.
Make an exception only when the app truly needs them to work.
A photo editor does not need your address book.
On Android: Settings -> Apps -> [app name] -> Permissions -> Contacts.
On iPhone: Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Contacts.
Go through that list once.
Switch off everything that has no business being there.
Then have the same conversation with your family.
The leak usually comes from the phones closest to you.
Deleting the app was never enough, and now you can explain why.
Things to Remember
- Say no when a new app asks to find or sync your contacts.
- Review contact permissions on your phone and revoke the ones you cannot justify.
- Remember that a shadow profile is built from other people's phones, not yours.
- Accept that there is no delete button for an account you never made.
- Tell your family too, because your details are sitting in their address books.
