You mention a product to a friend over chai.
An hour later it is in every ad on your phone.
So your phone must be listening, right?
Almost everyone believes this.
It isn't true, and what's actually happening is more uncomfortable.
If it isn't the microphone, what is it?
Most apps carry a hidden advertising ID.
That is a code attached to your phone that points straight to you, shared across apps that have nothing to do with each other.
Websites and apps are also full of trackers, which are small pieces of code that log what you look at and for how long.
Data brokers bundle all of it into a profile and sell it.
Advertisers buy that profile and match the ad back to your phone.
No microphone needed at any step.
Why does it feel so much like listening?
Because your data trail says more about you than your conversations ever could.
You searched something similar last week, or lingered on a related item on Amazon.in.
The system was already fairly confident about what you wanted.
You also never notice the ads that missed completely.
You only notice the one that landed.
The coincidence feels supernatural, and the profile behind it is very ordinary.
Can I turn the volume down?
You can, and on each phone it is a short walk through Settings.
On iPhone: Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Tracking -> turn off "Allow Apps to Request to Track".
On Android: Settings -> Privacy -> Ads -> Delete advertising ID.
Deleting the advertising ID breaks the thread that links what you do in one app to what you do in another.
You will still see ads.
They will just be far less about you.
Does this actually change anything?
It does not make you invisible, and it's worth being honest about that.
Sites can still track you while you are on them.
What you have removed is the easy, phone-wide identifier that made stitching your profile together effortless.
That is a real reduction, and it costs you nothing at all.
Do it once on every phone in the house, including your parents'.
It's not your mic, it's your data trail.
Things to Remember
- Your phone isn't listening; your data trail is doing the work.
- iPhone: Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Tracking, then turn tracking off.
- Android: Settings -> Privacy -> Ads -> Delete advertising ID.
- Expect fewer personal ads, not zero ads.
- Run the same check on every phone in the family.
