Most of us started doing business on the same WhatsApp we use for family jokes.
It works, until a client message arrives at eleven at night and you answer it because you saw it.
So let us build Lane 1: WhatsApp Business, your work lane.
It is a free, separate app, and setup takes about five minutes.
What is the one rule I must not break?
Use a separate number for your business.
This matters because a single phone number can only be on ONE of the two apps.
Regular WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business, never both at the same time.
So work lives on your business number, and everyday life stays on your personal one.
Decide which number is which before you start, because undoing it later is a nuisance.
How do I actually set it up?
Five steps, in this order.
- Install WhatsApp Business โ free, from the Play Store or App Store.
- Register your business number, the one clients should reach you on.
- Verify with the OTP, one tap, like any other app.
- Choose your business name.
- Set your business category.
If your business number is currently on regular WhatsApp, the app will offer to move it across.
Accept the offer and the app moves the number across for you.
Which bits should I take my time on?
The business name.
Pick it carefully, because it is not easy to change later.
Use the name your customers already say out loud, not a clever variation of it.
The category is worth a moment too.
It helps clients find you and makes your profile look legitimate rather than improvised.
Have I lost anything by doing this?
Nothing at all.
WhatsApp Business sits alongside regular WhatsApp on the same phone.
Both apps run side by side, with their own icons, their own chats and their own notifications.
Work in Business, everyday life in regular WhatsApp.
That single split is what lets you close one app in the evening without going off the grid entirely.
Foundation done.
In the next post, we make your Business profile actually look professional โ hours, location, the works.
Things to Remember
- Give your business its own number, because one number cannot run both apps.
- Install WhatsApp Business free from the Play Store or App Store.
- Let the app move your number across if it offers to.
- Choose your business name carefully โ changing it later is hard.
- Set a business category so you look like a proper business.
