Someone tells you to connect Google Drive to Claude.
Then it can read your own files and answer questions about them.
It sounds handy, and it genuinely is.
It is still worth knowing what moves where before you tap Connect.
What actually happens when I link an app?
Three steps, every time.
You connect the app, whether that is Google Drive, Slack, or an MCP server.
An MCP server just means a bridge that lets Claude talk to some other tool.
Some data is then shared with it, so Claude can read or act for you.
Claude pulls the results back into your conversation.
That is the whole loop.
Nothing is hidden in the middle of it.
Is that connected data used to train Claude?
No, and this is the part worth remembering.
Raw content that arrives through a connector is not used to train Anthropic's models.
There is one exception, and it is entirely yours.
That exception is copying the content into the chat yourself.
Paste a paragraph from that Drive document into the chat box.
It stops being connector content and becomes an ordinary message.
Ordinary messages follow ordinary rules.
So connected data stays out of training, as long as you do not paste it in.
Does that make connectors the safer choice?
For training purposes, yes.
Say you want Claude to work through a long document.
Pointing it at the file is cleaner than pasting the text in.
The content is then treated as connector content rather than as an ordinary message.
That is the whole difference.
The habit to build is a simple one.
Let the connector fetch it; do not fetch it yourself and paste.
What should I think about before connecting?
Connect the accounts you actually need, not every account you own.
A work Slack and a personal AI habit are a combination worth pausing over.
Remember too that connecting is not a one-off event.
That three-step loop runs again each time you ask something that touches it.
That is what you wanted when you set it up.
Things to Remember
- Connecting an app shares some data with it so Claude can read or act for you.
- Raw content from connectors is not used to train the models.
- The moment you paste that content into the chat, normal chat rules apply.
- Prefer letting the connector read a file over copying its text across.
- Only connect the accounts you genuinely need connected.
