There is a particular thought that stops people mid-sentence with any AI app.
You are typing something personal, and you pause.
Somewhere in an office, is a stranger reading this?
It is a fair question, and it deserves a straight answer.
So is a person reading my chats?
By default, no.
No human being is sitting there going through your conversations.
What handles your chats is automated systems, running the model itself and checking for abuse.
Automated means software, with no person in the loop reading along.
Your conversations are also encrypted, protected in transit and at rest.
In transit means while it travels between your device and the servers.
At rest means while it is stored.
When can staff actually see something?
In a few limited cases, not as a routine.
One is reviewing a policy violation, where a conversation has been flagged for breaking the rules.
The other is when you give consent yourself, such as when you submit feedback about a reply.
That second one catches people out, because giving feedback feels like a small action.
It is not a trap, it is just a door you open rather than one left open.
There is one more honest line to add.
Anthropic may access or disclose data where required by law, or to enforce its own rules.
Every serious company operates under that condition.
Any that claims otherwise is not being straight with you.
What does this mean for how I use Claude?
Treat the default as genuinely good, and then behave sensibly anyway.
The realistic risks are not a person reading over your shoulder.
They are the ordinary ones.
What you paste in, how long it is kept, what it gets used for.
So keep bank statements, OTP messages and other people's details out of the box.
Not because someone is watching.
Because good habits do not depend on trust.
If you are working on something genuinely confidential, pair that habit with the training toggle turned off.
Access being tightly limited is a strong protection.
Not sending the sensitive part at all is a stronger one.
Things to Remember
- Accept the default calmly: no human is routinely reading your conversations.
- Know that automated systems run Claude and check for abuse, not staff.
- Remember your chats are encrypted in transit and at rest.
- Treat submitting feedback as giving consent for that conversation to be seen.
- Keep account numbers, OTPs and other people's details out of the chat regardless.
