There is a thumbs up sitting right there under the reply.
You tap it without thinking, the way you would like a friend's photo.
That little button does more than you would expect.
What happens when I rate a reply?
Four things, and none of them are visible on screen.
- The whole chat is saved, stored securely for up to 5 years
- It is de-linked from you first, with your email and ID separated before it is used
- It is used to study and improve, so it may be analysed, researched, and used to train models
- It is kept separate, not combined with your other conversations
De-linked means the copy no longer carries your email and account ID.
Kept separate means it is not pooled with the rest of your history.
Both are meaningful protections, and worth crediting.
Why does the whole chat go?
Because a reply on its own tells nobody very much.
To judge an answer, you need to see what was asked before it.
So the useful unit is the conversation, not the single message.
That is reasonable engineering.
It is also why a one-second tap can share a forty-message chat.
Does the training setting cover this?
No, and this is the part most people get wrong.
Rating a reply is separate from the training setting.
Tapping thumbs shares that conversation even if model training is turned off.
Think of the training toggle as a standing instruction and feedback as a specific exception you make yourself.
You opened that door, so the toggle does not close it.
The five-year figure lands differently once you know that.
So should I never give feedback?
Not at all, and it would be a shame if that were the takeaway.
Feedback is how the tool gets better for everyone, including you.
Give it freely on the ordinary stuff: a code fix, a bad translation, a recipe that made no sense.
Just glance up at the conversation before you tap.
If that chat contains a client's name, a family matter, or anything from a bank statement, skip the thumbs.
Rate a reply, and you have shared that chat.
