You finish a chat with Claude and wish you hadn't sent part of it.
Maybe you pasted a bank statement, or a medical report.
So you hit delete, the chat disappears, and the doubt starts.
Is it actually gone, or just hidden from your screen?
Where is the delete button?
Open the chat, tap the three dots menu, then Delete.
That is the entire action.
There is no second cleanup step to remember.
Is it really gone, or just hidden?
Both things happen, at different speeds.
It leaves your history immediately, the moment you tap Delete.
It is purged from Anthropic's servers within 30 days.
Thirty days is the outer limit, not a queue you need to watch.
The chat is also excluded from training.
So it will not be used to build future models.
That last point is the one most people care about.
What is the one catch?
Deletion stops future use of your chat.
It cannot undo use that has already happened.
Say that chat was already inside a training run that had started.
It cannot be pulled back out.
The same applies if a model has already been trained on it.
Think of a book that has gone to press.
You can stop the next edition.
You cannot unprint the copies already on the shelf.
This is not a loophole in the fine print, it is how training works.
Why does the timing matter?
Because the clock starts when you send the message, not when you regret it.
A chat you delete tonight is in far better shape than one you delete next year.
So treat delete as something you do quickly.
Better still, treat it as your second line of defence.
The first line is deciding what you paste in at all.
If a document has your PAN or someone else's private details, ask whether Claude needs to see that part.
Usually it does not.
