What Does Claude Know About You Outside Your Chats?

What Does Claude Know About You Outside Your Chats?

We spend a lot of time worrying about what an AI does with our conversations.

We spend far less time on the boring part: what it knows about you as a customer.

The answer is smaller than most people expect.

What is collected when I sign up?

Three kinds of thing, and none of them are exotic.

Your name and email, used to create and secure your account.

Payment details, which are handled by a third-party payment provider.

Age or identity checks, sometimes requested, to keep Claude safe.

That is roughly the same information you hand over to buy a phone charger on Amazon.in.

Who is holding my card details?

Not Anthropic directly.

Payment details go through a third-party payment provider, which is a specialist company that exists to handle exactly this.

That is standard practice, and it is the arrangement you want.

The fewer companies that store your card number, the fewer places it can leak from.

It is the same reason you would rather pay by UPI than read your card out loud.

Why would it ask my age?

Age or identity checks are sometimes requested to keep Claude safe.

That is the same reason a bank asks for identity documents before opening an account.

It is not a great mystery, and it is not a data-gathering exercise dressed up as safety.

Note the word sometimes: it is not put to everyone, every time.

Is my data sold, or used to sell me things?

Anthropic states two things plainly.

It does not sell your data.

And Claude is ad-free, so your conversations are not used to target advertising at you.

That second point matters more than it first sounds.

Most of the free apps on your phone are free because your attention is what is being sold.

An assistant with no advertising attached is a different arrangement entirely.

That is worth noticing when you weigh one app against another.

None of this makes your account invisible.

It just means the account side of things is ordinary, and the interesting questions are all about your chats.
