What Actually Happens When You Pay by UPI?

What Actually Happens When You Pay by UPI?

You hold your phone to a QR code at the vegetable stall.

Four seconds later it is done.

Most of us have done this a thousand times.

We have never once asked what actually happened.

That is fine until a scam turns up dressed as a payment.

So let us take a minute over the machinery.

Know how UPI moves money and the rest of this series gets easy.

The scams stop being rules to memorise.

They simply look wrong.

What is UPI, in one line?

UPI pushes money from one bank account to another.

It uses a short address instead of account numbers.

That address is your UPI ID.

It usually looks like a name followed by a bank handle.

Now the part most people get wrong.

The money you pay by UPI never sits inside GPay, PhonePe or Paytm.

The app is only a remote control.

The money stays in your bank until your bank moves it.

That is why one account can sit in three apps at once.

Why does it ask for a PIN every time?

Because the PIN is your instruction to the bank.

It tells them to release the money.

No PIN, no debit.

That is the whole design.

Your bank checks the PIN, not the app you typed it into.

So nobody at the app company can see it or reset it.

Think of it as a signature on a cheque.

You sign a fresh one for every payment.

Do I need a PIN to receive money?

No.

This single line will protect you more than anything else here.

Receiving is passive.

The sender pushes, your bank accepts, your phone buzzes.

There is nothing you can type to pull money towards you.

So a refund screen that wants your PIN is not a refund.

Money is going out, not coming in.

The same goes for prizes, cashback and job payments.

What does the other person see?

They see the name your bank holds for you.

Not the nickname you set in the app.

That cuts both ways, and it is useful.

The name on your confirmation screen also comes from the bank.

If it does not match the shop in front of you, stop.

They can also see your UPI ID, and sometimes your number.

They cannot see your balance or your account number.

They cannot see anything else you have paid for.

Things to Remember

  • UPI moves money between banks, and the app is only a remote control.
  • A UPI PIN does one thing: it sends money out.
  • You never need a PIN or an OTP to receive money.
  • Read the name on the confirmation screen before you approve.
  • If a screen promising you money asks for your PIN, close it.
