A small amount leaves your account and you cannot place it.
It is not a fraud, and that is what makes it annoying.
It is something you agreed to on a Sunday afternoon eighteen months ago.
It has been collecting quietly ever since.
Most of us carry two or three of these.
Finding them takes ten minutes.
What is an autopay mandate?
Standing permission for someone to take money from you.
Think of a streaming service, an insurance premium, a mutual fund instalment.
When you set one up, you are not making a payment.
You are giving that company the right to debit you on a schedule.
That permission is the mandate.
It lives on long after you have forgotten the purchase.
It sits in your UPI app, your bank, or your card.
There are protections built in.
Your bank must warn you before a recurring debit lands.
Above a certain amount, you have to approve it afresh each time.
So those "your account will be debited tomorrow" messages are not spam.
They are your chance to stop something.
Where do I see the ones I already have?
Start with your UPI app.
The section is usually called Autopay, Mandates or Subscriptions, under your profile.
Then open your bank app and look for e-Mandates or Standing Instructions.
Then read a full card statement.
Card subscriptions do not show up in either of the first two places.
Read three months rather than one.
Plenty of these charge quarterly or once a year.
Write down anything you do not recognise before you start cancelling.
How do I stop one?
Cancel the mandate where you created it.
That is usually the payment app or the bank.
Then cancel the service with the company itself.
Both steps matter.
Stopping the mandate cuts off the money.
But the company may still treat you as a customer with dues.
Doing only the second step often leaves the mandate alive.
Check your account after the next billing date to be sure.
Why did a free trial start charging me?
Because the trial asked for a payment method.
That request set up the mandate on day one.
The free part was the first month, not the arrangement.
That is legal.
It was written in the line under the button you tapped.
So build one small habit.
The day you start a trial, set a reminder.
Set it for two days before the trial ends.
Then cancel it, or keep it on purpose.
Things to Remember
- A mandate is standing permission to debit you, not a single payment.
- Check three places: your UPI app, your bank app, your card statement.
- Read the pre-debit message instead of swiping it away.
- Cancel the mandate first, then cancel with the company.
- Set a reminder the day you start any free trial.
