Never Dial a Code a Caller Gives You

The caller says he is from your mobile network.

There is a problem with your SIM, or your network is about to be upgraded.

To fix it, you just need to dial a short code and a number.

It feels harmless, because you are only pressing keys on your own phone.

What does the code actually do?

Codes starting with *401# turn on call forwarding.

Once it is on, every call meant for you goes to the number they gave you.

You will not hear your phone ring.

Your family, your office and your bank will all reach the scammer instead.

Why does that matter so much?

Because many banks and apps can send an OTP by voice call.

With your calls going to them, they can receive those codes.

They can also tell your bank they are you when the bank calls back to check.

The Department of Telecommunications has warned people about exactly this.

Will my network ever ask me to dial a code?

No.

Telecom companies do not ask customers to dial *401# for any reason.

Any call asking you to dial a code followed by a number is a scam.

The same goes for codes sent by SMS or WhatsApp.

How do I check whether call forwarding is on?

On an iPhone, open Settings -> Apps -> Phone -> Call Forwarding.

On most Android phones, open the Phone app, then Settings -> Calls or Supplementary services -> Call forwarding.

If forwarding is on to a number you do not recognise, turn it off.

You can also call your network's official customer care and ask them to check.

What if I already dialled it?

Switch call forwarding off immediately.

Then call your bank on the number printed on your card and tell them what happened.

Check your bank and UPI apps for anything you did not do.

If money has gone, call 1930 and report it at cybercrime.gov.in straight away.
