What Is a Digital Arrest Call, and What Should You Do?

What Is a Digital Arrest Call, and What Should You Do?

The call says a parcel in your name has been caught with drugs.

Or your Aadhaar has been linked to money laundering.

Then a "police officer" appears on a video call, in uniform, in what looks like a police station.

You are told you are under "digital arrest" and must not leave the camera or tell anyone.

Is a digital arrest real?

No.

There is no such thing as a digital arrest in Indian law.

No police, CBI, customs, RBI or court official arrests or questions anyone over a WhatsApp or Skype video call.

The government has said this publicly, many times.

If you hear the words "digital arrest", you already know it is a scam.

How does the scam work?

It runs on fear and isolation.

They show fake ID cards, fake warrants and fake courtrooms.

They keep you on camera for hours, sometimes days.

They tell you not to call family, because the case is "confidential".

Finally, they ask you to transfer money to a "verification account" to prove your innocence.

They promise it will be returned once you are cleared.

It never is.

Why do careful people fall for it?

Because it is designed to stop you thinking.

The uniforms look real, the stories use your real name and number, and the pressure never lets up.

Educated, senior and successful people have lost crores to it.

Being targeted says nothing about your intelligence.

What should I do if I get this call?

Hang up.

You do not owe them an explanation.

Then tell someone you trust, right away, because isolation is their main weapon.

If you are worried there is a real case, find the police station's number yourself and call it.

Never use a number the caller gave you.

What if money has already gone?

Call 1930, the national cyber crime helpline, immediately.

Report it at cybercrime.gov.in as well.

Keep the phone numbers, screenshots and transaction details.

The first few hours matter most for stopping the money.

Things to Remember

  • Digital arrest does not exist. Hearing the phrase means it is a scam.
  • Real officials never question or arrest you over video calls.
  • Hang up, then talk to family straight away.
  • Never pay to a "verification" or "safe" account.
  • Report on 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in at once.
