You spent an evening deleting hundreds of photos.
Then you checked storage, and it barely moved.
It is not your imagination.
Most of those photos have not actually gone anywhere yet.
Where did my deleted photos go?
Into a bin.
Phones keep deleted photos for a while, in case you change your mind.
On an iPhone, they go to the Recently Deleted album and stay for 30 days.
On Android, Google Photos moves them to the Bin.
Backed-up photos stay there for 60 days, and photos only on the phone for 30.
Until then, they still take up space.
How do I empty it?
On iPhone, open Photos, scroll to Utilities -> Recently Deleted, then tap Delete All.
On Android, open Google Photos, go to Collections -> Bin, then tap Empty bin.
Before you do, scroll through once.
Emptying the bin is permanent.
Storage is still full. What else is using it?
Usually three things.
WhatsApp media. Every forward, video and good-morning image is saved.
Open WhatsApp -> Settings -> Storage and data -> Manage storage and clear the largest chats.
Downloaded videos. Netflix, YouTube and Prime downloads add up quickly.
Delete the ones you have already watched.
App caches. Some apps hold on to gigabytes of temporary files.
On Android, Settings -> Storage -> Apps shows the biggest ones.
On iPhone, Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage lists apps by size.
Will deleting from the phone delete it from my backup?
It depends on the app.
With iCloud Photos or Google Photos sync turned on, deleting on the phone deletes it everywhere.
So if you want photos off the phone but kept safely, move them to a computer or another drive first.
Check the copy opens before you delete the originals.
Things to Remember
- Deleted photos stay in a bin for 30 to 60 days.
- Empty Recently Deleted or the Bin to actually free space.
- WhatsApp media is often the biggest hidden user of storage.
- Synced photo apps delete everywhere, not just on the phone.
- Copy important photos elsewhere before deleting them.
