Share Your Wi-Fi Password Without Saying It

Share Your Wi-Fi Password Without Saying It

Guests arrive, and within minutes someone asks for the Wi-Fi password.

Nobody remembers it.

Someone goes to read the sticker under the router, and it is a long string of letters and numbers.

Your phone can share it in seconds instead.

How do I share it from an Android phone?

Make sure your own phone is connected to that Wi-Fi.

Open Settings -> Network & internet -> Internet, or Settings -> Connections -> Wi-Fi on Samsung phones.

Tap the settings icon next to your network, then tap Share.

Confirm with your fingerprint or PIN.

A QR code appears, and on many phones the password is shown below it too.

How does my guest use the QR code?

They open their camera and point it at your screen.

A prompt appears to join the network, and they tap it.

This works on most iPhones and Android phones.

How do I share it from an iPhone?

If your guest also has an iPhone, it is even simpler.

Unlock your iPhone and keep it near theirs.

When they choose your network, your phone shows a prompt to share the password.

Tap Share Password, and they are connected.

For this, each of you should be saved in the other's contacts.

Newer iPhones can also show the password or a QR code in the Passwords app, under Wi-Fi.

Should I give guests my main Wi-Fi?

For family and close friends, it is fine.

For workmen, tenants or lots of visitors, a guest network is better.

Most routers can create one in their settings or app.

It gives internet access without access to your printers, cameras and other devices.

When should I change the password?

When someone who had it moves out or stops working for you.

If the router still uses the password printed on its sticker, change that too.

Write the new one somewhere safe at home.
