You squint at it, type it in wrong, and try again.
Or a serial number on a router, a phone number on a poster, a menu you cannot read.
Your phone can read text inside any photo and hand it to you.
Once you know this, it feels like a superpower.
How do I use it?
On iPhone the feature is called Live Text.
Open any photo, then tap and hold on the text.
It works exactly like selecting text on a webpage.
On Android it is Google Lens.
Open the photo in Google Photos, tap the Lens icon, then tap the text.
Either way, the words become selectable in a second or two.
That is the whole thing, there is nothing to install and nothing to switch on.
What can I do once the text is selected?
Copy it, and paste that code, address or password anywhere you like.
Translate it, so a foreign menu or a street sign comes back in English.
Act on it, which is the part people miss.
Tap a phone number and it calls, tap an address and Maps opens, tap a link and it goes there.
And it works on screenshots too, not only on camera photos.
That means a number buried in a screenshot of a chat is one tap from being dialled.
When will I actually use this?
More often than you would guess.
The translate trick alone earns its place the moment you travel.
Hold your phone over a menu and read it in your own language, no typing at all.
Copying a long Wi-Fi password off a router sticker is a small thing.
It is also weirdly satisfying every single time.
Then there are the everyday ones.
A booking reference on a printed slip, or the address on a wedding card.
Anything you would otherwise have re-typed by hand.
Is there a catch?
Only that the photo needs to be reasonably clear.
Blurry text will come out with mistakes, so check it before you paste.
Printed text on a flat page is what it handles best.
Take the photo straight on rather than at an angle and it works far better.
