Google Deletes Accounts Left Unused for Two Years

Most of us have an old Gmail account we stopped using years ago.

It might hold the photos from a college trip.

Or the email that a bank, a school or a government portal still sends things to.

If nobody signs in to it, Google may delete it.

What is the rule?

Google can delete a personal account that has not been used for two years.

Deleting the account removes everything in it.

That means Gmail, Google Photos, Google Drive and YouTube content too.

Work and school accounts are not covered by this rule.

What counts as using it?

Almost anything done while signed in.

Reading or sending an email.

Opening Google Drive or Google Photos.

Watching a YouTube video, or downloading an app from the Play Store.

Searching on Google while signed in to that account.

Signing in to another app with "Sign in with Google".

Will Google warn me first?

Yes, several times over the months before deletion.

The warnings go to the account itself and to its recovery email.

If your recovery email is also old and unused, you will never see them.

How do I keep an old account alive?

Sign in to it at least once a year.

Open Gmail, read something, and sign out again.

While you are there, check that the recovery email and phone number are current.

A reminder in your calendar every January takes care of it.

What if I just want what is inside it?

Use Google Takeout at takeout.google.com.

Choose what to export, like Photos and Drive, and download the files.

Save them somewhere you actually use, then decide if you still need the account.

What about a family member's account?

If a parent or grandparent has a Google account, check it is still being used.

Google also has an Inactive Account Manager in account settings.

It lets someone decide in advance who receives their data if they stop using the account.
