You open Gmail to free up space and start deleting one email at a time.
Twenty minutes later you have barely made a dent.
There are thousands left.
Gmail has a much faster way, and it has been sitting in the search bar the whole time.
What is a search operator?
A search operator is a short instruction you type into the Gmail search bar.
Instead of a word to look for, it describes the kind of email you want.
Gmail pulls up exactly those emails, and then you delete the lot in one action.
There is nothing to install and nothing to switch on.
The whole thing is typing rather than tapping.
Copy these straight in:
- larger:10M for your biggest, space-eating emails
- older_than:1y for everything more than a year old
- has:attachment for every email carrying files
- category:promotions for sales, offers and marketing noise
- from:noreply for automatic emails you have never once read
You can stack them too, so try larger:10M older_than:1y.
How do I delete them all at once?
Run the search first and look at what comes back.
Tick the select box at the top-left of the list.
Gmail then offers a line saying "Select all conversations that match this search", so tap it.
Now hit Delete.
Thousands gone in one go.
Do read the results before you tap, because this is equally fast in the wrong direction.
What finishes the job?
Two steps that people always forget.
Open a couple of those promotional emails and tap "Unsubscribe" at the top.
That stops them at the source, so you are not doing this all again next year.
Then empty Spam and Trash.
Deleted mail sits in Trash and keeps using your storage until you clear it out.
That last step is the one that actually frees your space.
Skip it and the storage number will not move at all.
Do it and years of clutter disappear in an afternoon.
