Where a Phone Should Sit While Your Child Studies

The house has declared a phone ban for study hours.

By the fourth evening it has quietly collapsed.

Why does a total ban never last?

Because studying now needs the very device you banned.

The timetable arrives on a class group.

The notes are photos in a gallery.

The doubt gets asked online at ten at night.

A total ban makes the child a rule-breaker for doing their own work.

The second reason is that a phone out of sight is not out of mind.

A child wondering what they are missing is not studying either.

So the aim is not absence, it is distance and quiet.

Where should the phone live during study hours?

Out of arm's reach, in the same room as an adult.

A phone in another room causes a walk to fetch it.

Each walk costs far more than the trip itself, because settling back down takes longer than getting up.

A bowl or a tray on the dining table is the whole system.

If the phone is the study device, moving it is not an option.

Change what it does instead.

Turn on Do Not Disturb for the study block.

On an iPhone that is Settings -> Focus -> Do Not Disturb.

Where to tap: Settings then Focus then Do Not Disturb

On most Android phones it is Settings -> Notifications -> Do Not Disturb.

Allow calls from family only, so an urgent call still gets through.

Keep the phone face down.

Use a clock or a timer for the block, not the phone.

At night, the phone charges outside the bedroom.

That single rule is worth more than all the others together.

What about breaks, music and group chats?

Breaks are necessary, and the mistake is taking them on the same screen.

Stand up, walk, eat something, look out of a window for ten minutes.

A break spent scrolling is not rest, and everyone comes back more tired.

Music is fine for most children, as long as it stays music.

Instrumental or familiar songs work, and a video playing in the corner does not.

Group chats are where the real time goes.

Agree one slot per break for checking the class group, and mute it in between.

Agree the group is for doubts, not panic.

Class groups produce a great deal of panic in the days before a test.

If a chat is making things worse, leaving it for two weeks is allowed.

Things to Remember

  • Decide where the phone sits before the study block starts.
  • Keep it out of reach but in the room, not in another room.
  • Turn on Do Not Disturb and allow family calls only.
  • Take breaks away from the screen, not on it.
  • Charge phones outside the bedroom, every night.
