The problem is almost always physical, not technical.
Why does my child keep dropping out of class?
Four things decide whether an online class works: where they sit, the light, the microphone and the connection.
The connection is the one everyone blames first, and it is often innocent.
A Wi-Fi router two rooms away, behind a wall, will drop a video call while a message still goes through fine.
Mobile data can be steadier than weak Wi-Fi, so it is worth keeping a mobile hotspot ready as a backup.
The other three are ignored, and they are what make an hour useful or wasted.
Where should they actually sit?
At a table, with the screen roughly at eye level.
A child lying on a bed with a phone on their chest will stop following long before the class ends.
Put the light in front of them, not behind.
A window behind the head turns the face into a dark shape, and the teacher stops calling on a child they cannot see.
A plain wall behind them keeps the rest of the house out of the frame.
If the room echoes, cheap wired earphones fix it instantly.
Wired earphones also avoid the Bluetooth pairing drama at the start of every class.
The microphone in earphones sits near the mouth, so the child does not have to shout.
What can I check in two minutes before class?
Run the same short check every day until it becomes automatic.
- Is the device charged, or plugged in?
- Are earphones plugged in and working?
- Is the face lit from the front and clearly visible?
- Is the class link already open, not being hunted for?
- Are the notebook and pen on the table?
- Is everything else on the device closed?
Two minutes before class beats ten minutes of apologising during it.
One more habit is worth building.
Ask the child to keep the microphone off by default and unmute to speak.
It removes the background noise that gets a whole class muted by the teacher.
