Every family has tried a homework app.
It was set up on a Sunday with great enthusiasm, and abandoned by the third week.
The app was rarely the problem.
Why do homework apps get abandoned so fast?
Because the list was in one place and the child's attention was in another.
If the list only exists inside an app that nobody opens, it may as well not exist.
The second reason is that people write the wrong things down.
A line saying "Maths homework" tells you nothing when you read it at nine at night.
The third reason is that lists grow and nothing ever leaves them.
A list that never shrinks is not a list, it is a source of dread.
So keep it small, keep it specific, and keep it in the child's line of sight.
What belongs on the list?
Three things per item, and no more.
- The subject.
- What exactly is due, in the child's own words.
- The day it is due.
"Maths, sums 4 to 12 page 61, Thursday" is a task.
"Maths homework" is a worry.
A paper list on the study table works as well as any app, and often better.
If you prefer an app, use the notes or reminders app already on the device.
A new download is one more thing to forget the password to.
Whatever you pick, there is only one list, and everyone knows where it is.
Where should the notes live?
Somewhere else entirely.
The list is for what must be done, and notes are what was learnt.
Mixing them is how a good list turns into a swamp.
Notes belong in one document or one notebook per subject, in the order the class covered them.
The homework list should stay short enough to read in ten seconds.
Then add the routine that keeps it honest.
Five minutes every evening, at a fixed time, ideally right after dinner.
Cross off what is done, add whatever came from school today, and read tomorrow's items aloud.
Doing it aloud matters, because it turns a list into a plan.
On Sunday, spend the same five minutes looking at the week ahead.
Things to Remember
- One list, one place, and everyone knows where.
- Write subject, exact task and due day.
- Keep notes out of the list, in one file per subject.
- Five minutes every evening, at the same time, read aloud.
- If the list is not read, move it, do not replace the app.
