You picked up the phone to check one small thing before bed.
It is now past midnight and you are still scrolling.
The light, the colour, the endless feed.
Your phone is practically engineered to keep you awake.
A few settings flip that around.
Set them to switch on by themselves each evening, and the phone winds down when you do.
Why does my phone keep me awake?
Two things are working against you.
The first is the screen, because a bright display in a dark room jolts you awake.
The second is what is on it.
Bright thumbnails, red badges, a feed with no bottom.
You are not weak-willed, you are outnumbered.
Which settings should I turn on?
Six, and each one can run on a schedule.
- Warm night display, on at sunset โ Night Shift on iPhone, Night Light on Android, both cut the harsh blue light.
- Grayscale, from 10pm, which strips the colour out of everything on screen.
- Bedtime mode, 10pm to 7am โ Sleep Focus or Bedtime, which dims the phone and silences the night.
- Brightness, dimmed.
- Notifications, silenced, because nothing arriving at 1am is worth waking up for.
- Dark mode, on, since it is easier on tired eyes.
The word "automatically" is doing the heavy lifting here.
A setting you must remember to switch on is a setting you will abandon by Thursday.
Why is grayscale the big one?
Colour is what makes apps moreish.
Take it away and the feed looks like an old newspaper.
The red notification dot becomes a grey dot.
The bright thumbnail becomes a grey rectangle.
Your brain quietly loses interest.
You put the phone down without any argument with yourself.
Pair grayscale with a bedtime that arrives on its own, and the phone powers down alongside you.
Will one week really make a difference?
Give it seven nights before you decide.
You will reach for the phone far less at night.
Falling asleep gets easier too.
Nothing is lighting you up at the moment your body wants to switch off.
And if it does not suit you, every setting comes off as easily as it went on.
Things to Remember
- Schedule every setting; a manual one will not survive the week.
- Turn grayscale on from 10pm, because it does the real work.
- Start the warm night display at sunset, not at bedtime.
- Silence notifications overnight, keeping only calls you would genuinely take.
- Try the whole set for one week before judging it.
