Ten Minutes to Make a Phone Easier to See

Ten Minutes to Make a Phone Easier to See

You have just handed a phone to a parent or a grandparent.

Soon enough, the calls start.

The text is too small, and apps have gone missing.

Neither is their fault.

The phone arrived set up for someone with perfect eyesight.

Ten minutes in the settings fixes most of it.

Which settings actually make a difference?

Six of them, and you can do all six in one sitting.

Text size, set to Large.

Drag it up until it is comfortable for them, not for you.

Bold text, on.

Thin grey text is the real enemy, and bold is far clearer.

Display and icons, bigger.

On iPhone that is Display Zoom, on Android it is Display size.

It enlarges everything, including the icons.

Screen timeout, longer.

Nothing is worse than the screen locking while you are still reading.

Touch feedback, on.

A tiny vibration confirms the tap landed.

That is genuinely reassuring when you are not confident.

What is the one change that matters most?

The home screen.

A wall of apps is overwhelming.

Keep page one to the essentials.

Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, Camera, and very little else.

Everything else goes into a folder, or simply onto the next page.

Nothing is deleted, it is just a swipe away.

Six big, clear icons they actually use makes the whole phone feel manageable.

A screen packed with everything else makes it feel like a test.

How should I do it with them?

Sit beside them and change one thing at a time.

Show each setting as you turn it on, so they can see where it lives.

Say out loud that all of it can be undone.

That fear is what stops people touching settings at all.

Let them tell you when the text feels right.

If they say bigger, go bigger, even if it looks enormous to you.

Then hand it over and let them scroll through a chat.

You will spot the last adjustment almost immediately.

Do it with them, not for them, and they will keep it.

Things to Remember

  • Set text size to Large and turn Bold text on.
  • Increase Display Zoom on iPhone, or Display size on Android.
  • Make the screen timeout longer so it does not lock mid-read.
  • Keep only five or six essential apps on the first home screen page.
  • Show every change as you make it, and say nothing is permanent.
