Six Rules to Agree Before Your Child's First Phone

Six Rules to Agree Before Your Child's First Phone

The box is on the table and your child cannot stop looking at it.

Giving a child their first phone is a big moment.

The best thing you can do is agree the rules before you hand it over.

Not after.

Rules are so much easier to set on day one than to claw back later.

Why does the timing matter so much?

Because on day one, nothing has been taken away.

Everything you agree is simply how the phone works.

A bicycle comes with a helmet, and this phone comes with rules.

Introduce the same rule later on and it lands as a punishment.

You will then spend the evening arguing about fairness instead of talking about the real point.

What should the rules cover?

Sit down together and agree on these six.

  • It charges outside the bedroom at night, because sleep matters more than scrolling.
  • Tech-free at meals and during study time.
  • A daily screen-off time that you both stick to.
  • They ask before downloading any new app.
  • You will check the phone together, anytime, and nothing on it is secret.
  • They tell you if anything feels off, and there is no blame, ever.

Notice that two of those apply to you as well.

A tech-free dinner table only works if your phone is off it too.

Which two rules matter most?

The last two, by some distance.

"We check it together" keeps things transparent without feeling like spying.

Your child is in the room and part of it.

Checking the phone behind their back only teaches them to hide things better.

"Tell me, no blame" is the one that really counts.

Something scary or confusing will happen one day, and it will not be their fault.

If they expect anger, they will handle it alone.

If they expect help, they come to you.

That is worth more than every setting on the device.

How do I make them stick?

Write them down.

Stick the list on the fridge where everyone can see it.

A rule that lives on paper stops being your opinion.

It becomes just how things are here.

Then talk about them again as your child grows into the phone.

Things to Remember

  • Agree all the rules before you hand the phone over.
  • Charge it outside the bedroom, every night, no exceptions.
  • Keep meals and study time tech-free, for everyone in the house.
  • Check the phone together rather than in secret.
  • Promise no blame, then keep that promise the first time it is tested.
