Is your mobile phone monsoon ready?

We’re in the monsoons now and its raining on most days.

Our mobiles are like our lifelines, and hence we need to be extra careful about them not getting damaged due to water.

But wait! Some new mobile phones are dust and water-resistant.

What is IP Rating or IP Code?

Most portable devices (mobiles, tablets,ย  speakers, etc.) have an IP rating. The IP Rating is also called the Ingress Protection, which rates the degree of protection the device offers against intrusion, dust and water.

IP Rating Format is IPXX (where XX are 2 numbers)

1. Dust & Solid Objects

Rated from 0-6. Higher the number, better the protection.

Ideally, for a mobile phone, we should have a 6.

Having a 6 means no dust will enter inside the mobile, however, this doesn’t stop dust from entering the charging port and headphone jack.

2. Water

Rated from 0-9. Higher the number, better the protection.

Most flagship phones have a rating of 8.

These ratings are only for freshwater.

The ratings range from dripping water, falling water, splashes, jets of water and finally to the immersion of the device in the water!

Nobody would intentionally do this, but its good to know that your phone would survive this.

What is the IP Rating of my phone?

The simplest way to find out this is to simply Google it.

Just type the model number of your phone followed by “IP rating” and search.

The latest iPhonesย  (XS, XS Max & XR) and Samsung Galaxy S10 series phones (S10, S10+ & S10e) all have an IP68 rating, which is really good!
