The laptop is a few years old and something about it has started to annoy you.
So you open a shopping app and begin scrolling.
An hour later you have twelve tabs open and no decision.
The problem is that you started shopping before you decided anything.
What am I actually unhappy about?
Begin with the complaint, not the product.
Say it out loud in ordinary words.
"It dies by four in the afternoon."
"The photos come out blurry indoors."
Notice that none of those mention a brand or a number.
A shop can only sell you a product, but you are trying to fix a problem.
Sometimes the problem is not a buying problem at all.
A device that has simply filled up may only need a clean-out.
How do I turn a complaint into a list?
Write one line per complaint in your notes app.
Beside each one, write what "fixed" would look like.
"Dies by four" becomes "lasts a full day of my normal use".
"Blurry indoors" becomes "usable photos at a restaurant at night".
Now you are holding a list of jobs, in your own words.
That list is what goes shopping with you.
Every claim a salesman makes can be tested against it.
Which of these are needs and which are nice to have?
Go down your list and mark each line N or L.
N means the purchase has failed without it.
L means you would simply enjoy it.
Be honest here, because this is where money quietly leaks.
Usually there are a couple of real needs and a long tail of likes.
Then add the lines nobody thinks to write down.
Where will this thing physically live, and does it fit there?
Who else in the house will use it?
Must it work with something you already own?
How long do I want this to last?
Decide the number of years before you decide the money.
Something you plan to keep for five years deserves different questions from a stopgap.
Longer means asking about repairs, spare parts and how long updates will keep coming.
Shorter means buying plainly and refusing to pay for future-proofing you will never use.
Write the years at the top of your list.
Then write down a figure you are comfortable spending.
A number decided in a calm room is very hard to talk you out of in a shop.
Only now should you open the shopping app.
Things to Remember
- Write down the complaint before you look at any product.
- Turn every complaint into a plain description of "fixed".
- Mark each line honestly as a need or a nice-to-have.
- Decide how many years it must last before you decide the budget.
- Carry the list with you and judge every claim against it.
