We’ve all heard stories of how bad the air pollution is in places like Delhi where pollution levels are 5-10 times the permissible limit. It has become hazardous just to walk outside.
How do we measure Air Quality?
The National Air Quality Index (AQI) was launched in 2017.
Particulate matter (PM) is the sum of all solid and liquid particles suspended in air. These particles are extremely small.
PM 2.5 & PM 10 refer to the size of the particles. These are measured in microns. Just to give you an idea, 1mm = 1000 microns. So you can imagine how small 2.5 micron particles are!
How do I find out the Air Quality Index (AQI) at my location?

What can we do about this?
There is construction going on everywhere. Metros are being constructed and a huge number of housing projects are underway. These are the main contributors to air pollution in larger cities. Some cities have even put up digital signs showing the air quality index.
The only action we can take is to see that the air we breathe indoors is as clean as possible.
Mi Air Purifier 2S
Out of the many purifiers available online (which are a lot and very confusing), I finally settled on the Mi Air Purifier 2S.
The features that were important to me were:
- It works! After a few days, I noticed a difference in air quality. It was much better!
- The filter is cost-effective and easy to order. It must be replaced every 6 months.
- It connects to Wi-Fi and has a mobile app for iOS & Android. This makes it easy to set up, monitor and control.
- Lovely design! It looks extremely sleek and can be placed anywhere.
- The display automatically adjusts according to the ambient light. So at night, the display is extremely dim.
- It is extremely silent.
