At some point, every one of us has dropped a phone.

How do screens actually break?
Almost always in a small careless moment.
Pulling the phone out of a tight pocket, or dropping it back into a bag while walking.
Some of us still carry the old Nokia 3310 confidence that a phone survives anything.
Today's glass is tougher, whether it is Ceramic Shield on an iPhone or Gorilla Glass on Android.
Tougher is not unbreakable, and a corner meeting a marble floor still wins.
Does a case really make a difference?
Yes, and mostly because of the corners.
A dropped phone usually lands on a corner first.
The crack then spreads across the screen from that point.
A case with raised corners and a lip above the glass absorbs that hit.
Those of you using a phone with no case at all are truly living on the edge.
Which screen protector should I buy?
Tempered glass, and there is no longer much of an argument about it.
It feels like the real screen, it goes on easily, and it takes the chip instead of your display.
The thin plastic films we used years ago scratch, discolour and peel.
Buy a good quality one, not the cheapest at the shop.
If your phone unlocks with a fingerprint sensor under the screen, check that the box says it supports one.
My screen is cracked, now what?
Back up the phone first.
On an iPhone go to Settings -> your name -> iCloud -> iCloud Backup.
On Android go to Settings -> Google -> Backup.
If the glass is badly shattered, stop using it, because splinters and fingertips do not mix.
Then get it repaired soon, since a crack lets in dust and water.
Should I go to an authorised service centre?
The shop down the road will offer a "compatible" screen for much less, and it is tempting.
Most phones today carry an IP68 water and dust rating, and a cheap repair breaks that seal.
Parts tied to the original screen, like Face ID or the fingerprint sensor, often stop working too.
Pay a little more and go to an authorised service centre.
Things to Remember
