Never use a Debit Card for Online Shopping

Never use a Debit Card for Online Shopping

Sale weekend, cart full, and the payment page asks how you would like to pay.

Most of us tap the debit card without thinking twice.

That is the one habit worth changing.

Why is a debit card riskier?

Your debit card is a direct pipe into your bank account.

The moment you pay, the money leaves your balance.

So if someone gets hold of those card details, they are not spending the bank's money.

They are spending yours.

You can complain, and you should.

But the money is gone while the case is investigated.

What is different about a credit card?

The credit card company pays the shop, and you settle the bill at the end of the billing cycle.

At the moment of purchase, no money has actually left your account.

If the card is misused, you dispute the charge before you have paid a single rupee.

That gap between buying and paying is the whole protection.

Don't I lose money by paying later?

It is the other way around.

A credit card gives you a free credit period, usually a few weeks.

Your money stays in your savings account for those extra weeks and keeps earning interest.

Just clear the bill in full on the due date, because credit card interest is brutal.

What if I don't want a credit card?

Then pay by UPI, the system behind Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm.

UPI never hands the shop your account number or your card details.

There is nothing saved that can be stolen and reused later.

The money still leaves your account at once, so it is not credit card protection.

But it beats typing your debit card number into a website.

What should I do now?

  • Open your bank app and find the card control settings.
  • Cards now arrive with online and international use switched off, so turn on only what you need.
  • Set a low limit for online use, and raise it on the day you buy something big.
  • Shop on established sites like Amazon.in, Flipkart or the brand's own website.

RBI's rules protect you fully if you report an unauthorised transaction within three working days.

That clock starts from the bank's alert, so never swipe away those SMS messages.

Things to Remember

  • Use a credit card or UPI online, and keep the debit card for the ATM.
  • Enable online use only on the card you actually shop with.
  • Keep the online transaction limit low by default.
  • Check your bank and card statements once a month.
  • Report anything you do not recognise the same day you spot it.
