Every September, Apple puts on a keynote and we all quietly start doing sums.
By the end of it, the perfectly good phone in your pocket suddenly feels old.
Let us be honest about this one first.
Do I need to buy the new iPhone?
Not every year, no.
An iPhone bought today will keep getting new versions of iOS for years.
A working one owes you nothing.
Upgrade when the battery gives up by evening, or when your model stops getting updates.
Open Settings -> Battery -> Battery Health and look at the number before you decide anything.
If you are buying anyway, three things genuinely make the new ones worth the money.
The display
Every iPhone in the current line-up has an OLED screen that runs edge to edge.
OLED means each pixel makes its own light, so black is properly black instead of dark grey.
Outdoors in May sunshine, the newer screens are the difference between reading your messages and squinting at them.
The home button is long gone, and Face ID unlocks the phone simply because you looked at it.
It takes a day to get used to, and then you forget it exists.
One cable for everything
Apple's old Lightning cable is finished.
New iPhones charge over USB-C, the same cable as your MacBook, your iPad and your friend's Android phone.
That is one charger in your bag instead of three, which sounds small until you travel.
Dual SIM that finally works in India
When I first wrote this, dual SIM on an iPhone was a wait-and-watch situation.
The waiting is over.
An eSIM is simply a SIM built into the phone, activated over the internet.
Jio, Airtel and Vi all support it.
Indian iPhones still have a normal SIM tray too, so you can run one physical SIM alongside one eSIM.
Ask your operator to convert your number to eSIM and it is usually done the same day.
Do check the exact model though.
The newest, thinnest iPhones have dropped the SIM tray completely.
There is one catch.
An eSIM lives inside the phone, so moving your number to a borrowed handset takes minutes rather than seconds.
Things to Remember
- Upgrade when your battery or your software support runs out, not when the keynote ends.
- Last year's model is still an excellent phone at a much better price.
- Check Battery Health on your current iPhone first.
- Ask your operator about eSIM before you buy, not after.
- Buy from Apple India or a trusted seller, and keep the invoice safe for warranty.
